A Light in the Darkness

'Out of the eater came something to eat, And out of the strong came something sweet.'     Judges 14:14

It is God’s awesome story of grace…that out of death, suffering, illness, darkness, weakness…God is able to bring life, joy, healing, light and strength. All across the Mission in Africa, God has never failed us.

In Kenya last Christmas, the country was in great crisis and all that remained from some homes were burnt out shells, leaving many homeless. Streets were deserted and a pervading air of hate and destruction was about the towns. God’s Grace however, was at work and our churches were resonating with the joyful sound of God’s children worshiping Him.

In Nairobi, we welcomed many new members to our family, as Fr Moses baptized several Kenyans into our church. Christmas came and we celebrated the marvelous birth of our Wonderful Prince of Peace. Tasoni Aida and other Coptic heroes, both Egyptian and Kenyan, made it a cheerful occasion with Christmas gifts for everyone.

In the monastery at Maseno, Fr Elisha and Fr Bishoi led the congregations of eight local churches in praising our King. Tasoni Manal, together with the young international  missionaries and our local African heroes, worked hard in distributing clothes, food, Christmas gifts and preparing a great celebration for the occasion.

In Kisumu, which was the worst affected city by the violence and chaos, Fr Thomas continued faithfully serving, helping and protecting his congregation and churches. He stood steadfast, refusing to flee and seek safety for himself and his family. A great group of Kenyan heroes were loyally working with him in service and caring for the suffering people. Our brothers in Luo land, Fr Jacob and Fr Timothy, along with their deacons, persisted with heartfelt prayers and brave service in what were very distressing situations.

Our family in Zambia were also experiencing a trying time. Unrelenting heavy rains and devastating flooding destroyed villages, but could not stop our Coptic heroes. They donned long boots and continued in the service with the joy of their Lord. Fr Mark with Fr Abraham insisted to lead their church family in the joyous Epiphany celebration. Mama Olivia with Mama Dalia made it a great occasion with wonderful dishes and great smiles all round.

Truly ‘we have known and believed the love that God has for us’.1 John 4:16 And in knowing this, we can relax and ‘Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication , with thanksgiving, let [our] requests be made known to God; and the peace of God…will guard [our] hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.’ Phil 4:6,7
